What’s In And Out for 2016

High-impact workouts? So 2015. Green juices? Old news.
From sightseeing in Iran to good grammar and bathing with seaweed.

OUT: Those lazy weeknight Ubers (unless you’re pooling).
IN: London’s inner-city cycling is set to be safer and faster with the launch of the new cycle super-highway from Tower Hill to Lancaster Gate this summer. Get slick for your sporty commute at Rapha Cycle Club (85 Brewer Street, W1).

OUT: High-maintenance Seventies flicks.
IN: All hail the demi-buzz. The undercut (a style faithfully followed by model Alice Dellal since the early Noughties) is returning on guys and girls for those not wanting to commit to the full Ruth Bell en brosse.

OUT: Tapered-leg trousers.
IN: Wide strides.

OUT: The cold-pressed cleanse.
IN: Bathing in green waters. Forget drinking foul green juices, now it’s all about bathing in the goodness of seaweed (Cornishseaweed.co.uk).

OUT: The latest studio fad.
IN: Walking. Forget the HIIT workout; low-impact long walks take the stress out of daily journeys, improving fitness without the deafening electro house and mile-long waiting lists. What to say: “I’m going for dinner in Hampstead, I’m just going to walk there.” Invest in Prada’s hiking boots and an Apple watch.

OUT: Navel gazing in the obvious fashion spots – Tulum, Ibiza, Mykonos… It’s time to move on.
IN: Meaningful travel. Bold travellers are now booking holidays to Iran. The UK embassy is about to reopen, and the country’s breathtaking Unesco sites are also reopening to the world.

OUT: Pretending to go with the flow.
IN: Planning ahead, tidying and making reservations. Read Spark Joy, the new book by Marie Kondo, and download Evernote.

OUT: Mash-tags – endless multi-hashtags.
IN: Good grammar.

OUT: The bare-faced look.
IN: Brave eye make-up. Eighties “club kid” eyes (try to get your hands on Pat McGrath’s new line ASAP).

OUT: All things Skandi.
IN: Taking layering to interiors – a mood of maximalism and opulence is returning to the home.

OUT: Small succulents (sorry, but it’s a question of scale…)
IN: An indoor banana-leaf plant or a fig tree.

OUT: Burgers. Yawn.
IN: Gourmet kebabs (head to new restaurant Le Bab, W1, or East London favourite Mangal 1, E8).

OUT: Cross-body bags (they didn’t hold much anyway).
IN: Burberry’s backpack is here to stay (especially when monogrammed). This is the year to book your grown-up backpacking adventure, and this is the bag to carry.

OUT: Skate shoes – really, definitely, over now.
IN: The year-round bovver boot will see you through fashion week in February, Glastonbury and Frieze. See Céline’s spring/summer 2016 catwalk for inspiration on how to wear it with your new season lingerie dress.
